Tens of thousands of people packed in to Budds Creek Motocross Park on Saturday to watch the hottest driver on two wheels extend his winning streak in the 450 class. Ryan Dungey dominated en route to victory in the fifth round of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship.
Dungey was dominant, and when he led, he was in a class of his own. His margins of victory were 43.312 seconds over Broc Tickle in 450 Moto 1 and 33.445 seconds in Moto 2. Tickle finished second in both Moto 1 and Moto 2, resulting in a second place overall finish. Dungey extended a red hot winning streak, where he has won the last six motos.
“It was good (today), starting from practice and into the (races),” Dungey said. “I got good starts, which helped get me out front. Mike (Alessi) and Broc (Tickle) both rode well, so I had to do some work in that second moto. We have a couple weeks off now, so I’ll use it to my advantage and see if we can (still) get a little bit better.
“It’s great to get a win here. I was looking forward to coming to this track, it’s one of my favorite tracks on the circuit. It’s technical; it has everything that brings out the rider.”
“Today was weird,” Tickle said. It was just a different day. Hopefully I can keep having these days. I’ve had more confidence than I did in Supercross. I feel like I belong up here and I want to be up here every weekend. I race my dirt bike to have fun and do the best I can. A podium finish is a great way to start the rest of the season. My dad, we’ve been doing this a long time. I can’t thank everybody enough, starting with my dad, mom and my wife for being so supportive. There for a minute, it was kind of fun when we were bunched up. It was fun to be up front. I haven’t had that much time up there so I just want to keep doing what I’m doing and keep having fun.”
“I’m trying to be there consistently every weekend,” third-place overall finisher Mike Alessi, who is second in points, said. “The track was really bumpy which was good. It was technical, made for some great racing. It’s been a long year for me. If you look at the stats, I’m the only rider that has raced every single race. That’s something I’m somewhat happy about but it means I’ve done the most riding out of everybody on the track.
“(Ryan) is the best in the world. I’m getting closer; he’s just in another level. It’s going to take some time to get to that level. It’s not easy. Riding at the speed is not easy and one mistake can be fatal. If someone’s faster, they’re going to get by me but I’m going to put up a fight. I’m going to ride to my ability and have fun.”
