PHOENIX, Md. — Eddie the Eagle is on the road to recovery after being rescued last week.

Gentle Hands Wildlife Services in Hollywood came to his aid after a Southern Maryland landowner who walking his dog discovered the injured raptor on his property. The bird could only fly short distances before crashing. His rescuer originally feared he’d been shot.

However, x-rays showed he’d been injured in a fight with another eagle. The images revealed deep talon marks.
The folks at Phoenix Wildlife Center are currently caring for the bird, whom they’ve named Eddie.

Phoenix Wildlife Executive Director Kathy Woods says Eddie isn’t feeling so well. “He is very sore. His wounds are deep and tender to the touch. He also has a clenched foot due to pain and perhaps a little back trauma. It’s hard to tell how long he will be here.”

Eddie is currently non-steroidal anti-inflammatories similar to Motrin and antibiotics for his wounds.

He’s only one of many patients treated by the center over the past 21 years. Woods says, “We take everything from bats to bald eagles and have the facilities and training for all.”

The center is non-profit and 100% volunteer-run and community-supported, so they need all the help they can get taking care of animal friends like Eddie.
