Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is in the news this week for his stance on immigration. Appearing on the Sunday shows, heโ€™s denied that heโ€™s changed his views on immigration reform.ย In aย Washington Timesย article on Monday, March 11 by David Sherinski, Jeb says he is still in favor of a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants along with the bipartisan group of senators now crafting a bill.ย Apparently, his new book presenting a way to residency for those illegally in the country is being criticized from those on the right and on the left.

Mr. Bush is making a distinction in his new book, โ€œImmigration Wars: Forging an America Solutionโ€ saying that he favors a โ€œโ€ฆpathway to residency, rather than citizenship, for the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants already in the county, and that they should have to leave the country and reapply if they truly want to get U.S. citizenship.โ€

Mr. Sherinski goes on to say that โ€œRepublicans working on the issue have a tricky needle to thread between distancing themselves from the president and potentially alienating Latino voters.โ€

Republicansโ€ฆthe clock is ticking; the 2014 primary is only a year and 3 months away. The GOP needs to come up with a workable plan on immigration reform/The Dream Act before the Democrats take the ball and run with it. Republicans who are attempting to deal with these issues are routinely criticized (in last weekโ€™sย Ellynne en Pointeย I wrote about John McCainโ€™s position). Republicans acknowledge that they cannot โ€“ must not โ€“ lose the House.
