The โRepublican One Step Backwardโ Award this week goes to none other than Rep. Don Young (of Alaska) for using a slur against Mexican Americans during a recent radio station interview. To his credit, Young has apologized for his statement, saying that he โmeant no disrespectโ and that it was โa poor choice of words.โ Sigh. Just when it looks as if the Republicans are making some small progress with the partisan Gang of Eightโs immigration reform recommendations, due out soon, โย The Washington Timesย on March 28 quoted GO8 member Sen. Charles E. Schumer of New York telling reporters โIโd say weโre 90 percent thereโ โ we have Rep. Young, shooting the party in the foot, so to speak.
I have not heard the term Mr. Young used since the 1961 film โThe Flower Drum Songโ (music and lyrics by Rodgers and Hammerstein; based on the 1958 Broadway musical which was based on the 1957 novel of the same name โ and the particular word in question was used to describe a totally different ethnic group). So in addition to receiving Washington Post columnist Chris Cillizzaโs โWorst Week in Washingtonโ Award (The Washington Post, Sunday, March 31), Rep. Young now has the additional honor of being the recipient of theย Baynet EePย columnโs โRepublican One Step Backwardโ Award.
To echo the words of Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jihndal, delivered during his January speech as keynote speaker at the Republican National Committeeโs winter meeting in Charlotteโฆ โItโs time for the Republican Party to stop being the Stupid Party.โย
