Mechanicsville, MD – Officials from the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department reported crews answered an unusual rescue call during the overnight hours of Saturday, Aug. 29.

According to a posted report, emergency personnel responded to a farm off of Baptist Church Road for an animal rescue. Upon arrival, the rescue squad โ€œfound a pet dog that was trapped in a drainage ditch pipe after chasing a rabbit into it. The crew worked diligently to supply the dog with some fresh air, via an SCBA spare bottle with a blow by method. The crew then dug out the top of the pipe that was about 3-feet deep. Once the pipe was accessible, a Sawzallยฎ was utilized to remove the top side of the pipe as far back as they could dig. A catch pole from the St. Mary’s County Animal Control warden on scene was used to grasp the dog and pull him out without injury.โ€

Local fire officials estimated the rescue took less than an hour.
