Tropical Storm (later tropical depression) Ernesto visited the Chesapeake Bay area today.ย  Winds between 20 and 45 mph battered The Bay Netโ€™s home turf of Southern Maryland.ย

Calvert, Charles and St. Maryโ€™s residentsย are copingย with high winds and rain, power outages, traffic accidents and road closures throughout the area.

Current forecasts predict that the storm will abate in Calvert by midnight tonight, though the overnight high tide could be problematic for the county.

Sand bags and sand for Calvert County residents are currently available until midnight at: Highway Maintenance Facility, 335 Stafford Road, Barstow; 96 Pushaw Station Road, Sunderland; and Appeal Landfill, Lusby.

As of 6 p.m. this evening shelters were opened at Calvert High School in Prince Frederick and Huntingtown High School in Huntingtown. If you have special needs or have no other method of transportation you can call 410-535-0396 or 410-535-0314. You can also call these numbers if you are a resident with questions or concerns.

So far the damage does not seem anywhere near the damage brought on by Hurricane Isabel in September of 2003.
