Hollywood, MD— “I am honored to commemorate the life of John “Skillet” Ulmschneider, I send my deepest sympathies to the family, his fellow Prince George’s County Fire Fighters, and to all that loved him,” said Maryland Governor Larry Hogan when speaking at The Mass of Christian Burial for John “Skillet” Ulmschneider.
Fire fighters, emergency personnel, and friends numbered in the thousands to celebrate Ulmschneider’s life at St. John Francis Regis Catholic Parish in Hollywood. Father Raymond Schmidt led the opening prayer followed by two readings by Mike Ulmschneider and Joe Ulmschneider.
Many people knew Ulmschneider as a hard worker, and that he enjoyed being with his family more than anything. Father Schmidt spoke about the calling that Ulmschneider had for helping people out. “There is not fear not regrets just an open door into internal life,” said Father Schmidt.
Mark E. Brady, chief spokesperson of the Prince George’s Fire Department said, “Ulmschneider was a hard worker, he loved working on his farm with his tractor. Ulmschneider was someone who was farm-boy strong and would help anyone out.”
Hogan also talked about the recent passing of multiple first responders in the last few weeks, “Today, as another one of our heroes is called home, it is with the knowledge that John Ulmschneider’s mark on this life will never be forgotten.”
Rushern L. Baker III, the county executive of Prince George’s County, spoke about taking the time to give thanks. “We invoke the sacrifices of our fallen heroes in the abstract, but we seldom take the time to thank them individually.”
Other people remembering Ulmschneider recall his deep love for every part of his life, which would include at home with his wife Dawn Padgett and his daughter Abigail.
Prince George’s County Fire Chief Marc Bashoor spoke about why things happen the way they do. “Sometimes, bad things just happen. Our job is to rise above the chaos and make a difference.”
