A fire that was started by candles that were left unattended damaged a house in Lusby Tuesday, Jan. 7, state officials reported.

According to the Maryland State Fire Marshalโs Office, the blaze occurred shortly after 3 p.m. at the two-story, single family home on Sailboat Lane.

Forty firefighters from St. Leonard, Solomons, Prince Frederick and Hollywood responded to the one-alarm fire and brought the flames under control in 30 minutes. There were no injuries reported.

The investigator, Dfm. Melissa Bean, said the blaze was discovered by the occupant and originated in the living room. A smoke alarm was activated.

Damage to the house is estimated at $200,000.

Bean said the occupants were displaced as a result of the fire. They are being assisted by friends and the American Red Cross.
