At about 8:30 p.m. Jan. 26, emergency personnel dispatched a house fire on Leonardtown Road, just north of Sandy Level, Bryantown, along Rt. 5.

When responders arrived they found fire pouring out of a first floor window of the two story home. A Charles County Sheriffโ€™s Officer immediately began using his fire extinguisher through the window from the outside.

Hughesville’s Engine 23 arrived and took a hand-line into the house to attack the fire, which was confined to one bedroom, Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department reports.

Waldorf’s Engine 32 and Squad 3 arrived and started to set up lights and fans to vent the heat and smoke out of the house. Hughesville’s Tanker 2 and Squad 2 checked the house to make sure the fire did not extend beyond the room of origin.

The family of 10 was displaced because the fire, which was determined to have started as a result of children playing with a lighter. The Office of the State Fire Marshal responded to the scene and investigated what caused the fire.

The Red Cross responded to the scene and will be assisting the family.
