Leonardtown, MD –ย On Tuesday, Jan. 31, the Commissioners of St. Maryโs County recognized February as being African American History Month with a proclamation ceremony during their regular business meeting. The ceremony included presenting certificates of recognition to members of the local community who regularly serve to share the historic and present contributions of African Americans.
Certificates of recognition were given to Dr. Janice T. Walthour, who is the current president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); Kelsey R.M. Bush, who is the current liaison to the Human Relations Commission; and Michael Brown, the president of the United Coalition for Afro-American Contributions.
In February 1926, African American History Month began as โNegro History Weekโ as a supplement to the school curriculum, through the work of African American scholar and historian Dr. Carter A. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Beginning in 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. African-American History Month is celebrated each year during the month of February as it coincides with the birthday of the great black leader Frederick Douglass and President Abraham Lincoln.
โSt. Maryโs County recognizes the significant contributions and tremendous advances African-Americans have made and continue to make in our community,โ said Commissioner Mike Hewitt. โThis is evidenced by the United States Colored Troops Monument in Lancaster Park, the State of Maryland and the world.โ In proclaiming February 2017, African-American History Month, the Commissioners of St. Maryโs County encouraged all citizens to honor the many contributions made by African-Americans throughout the Southern Maryland region. Therefore, anticipating many educational events to promote and highlight African-Americans.
โI think that this is aย good thing,โ said Dr. Walthour. โMore attention needs to be placed on the significant contributions made by African-Americans in Southern Maryland.โย Dr. Walthour told TheBayNet.com throughout the month of February the NAACP will host several events in honor of African-Americans. โOn Feb. 11, we will host a Community Health Awareness day at the Lofler Senior Center and on Feb. 17 we will co-sponsor a career day with the St. Maryโs County Public Schools.โ
