Prince Frederick, MD – Calvert Hospice hosted its Third annual Festival of Wreaths Saturday, Nov. 17 at Calvert High School. The five-hour event is more than just a showcase for holiday season wreaths. The family event gives the smaller children a chance to meet Santa Claus. This year, Breakfast with Santa was a sellout. Santa Claus, who arrived at the fest by way of firetruck, was also available for photos.

For a small fee, attendees could create his or her own wreath or centerpiece with fresh greenery. Children could also create their own Christmas decorations. Wreaths and other decorations and ornaments were available for sale. Bids for wreaths were submitted in person and via cellphone.

There was also live entertainment by local artists like John Luskey, who sang several Yuletide favorites.

Calvert Hospice was started in 1984 with a charge to serve patients with life-limiting illnesses. The local Hospice provides medical care, pain and symptom management, and emotional and spiritual support. The organization also provides bereavement aftercare.

For many years, Calvert Hospice presented Festival of Trees, an event that covered the three days following Thanksgiving. The final Festival of Trees in Calvert was held in 2015. Festival of Wreaths was first held in 2016 the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
Proceeds from the event will provide much needed funds for the Burnett Calvert Hospice House. The house opened in 2009 and began accepting patients in early 2010. The six-bed home is manned 24/7 by Hospice staffโ€”professionals and volunteers.
