DC Firefighter,ย Lt. Kevin McRae, of Waldorf, Md. died May 6 fighting a two alarm fire in an apartment building in Shaw.

According to NBC Washington Lt. McRae and another firefighter went up to the top floors of the burning apartment building to help families escape. Upon exiting the building Lt. McRae collapsed. CPR was performed by paramedics and he was transported toย MedStar Washington Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According toย The Washington Postย Lt. McRae had just returned from assisting firefighters in Baltimore. He was the 100th D.C. firefighter to die in the line of duty since 1856.ย 

The Commissioners of St. Maryโ€™s County join in grieving the loss of Lt. McRae.

Lt. McRae was well known to members of the Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department. He went through professional development and provided training assistance to a number of the volunteers at the department. He had just returned to his job in DC after assisting firefighters in Baltimore in the wake of protests there.

โ€œOur hearts are saddened by the tragic loss of Lt. McRae,โ€ said Commissioner Randy Guy. โ€œHe played an invaluable role in the development of a number of our volunteer firefighters here in St. Maryโ€™s County and his presence will be missed. As such I have ordered that the St. Maryโ€™s County flag be flown at half-staff until next Thursday in his memory.โ€

โ€œThis is a very tough loss for the volunteer firefighter community,โ€ said Commissioner John Oโ€™Connor (3rd District.) โ€œMy sincere condolences go out to his family as well as his fellow firefighters in DC as well as here in St. Maryโ€™s County. He will be sorely missed.โ€
