Benfield Rush entertains Independence Day Weekend revelers at Chesapeake Beach Resort and Spa.

Chesapeake Beach, MD –ย All day long Sunday, July 3 intermittent rain throughout the Southern Maryland led to speculation that fireworks in the Twin Beach area of Calvert County might be scratched for a second time. The show was originally planned for Friday, July but stormy weather prompted town officials to move the fireworks to Sunday.ย

Sunday’s forecast proved to be just as volatile as Friday’s. However, shortly before 7 p.m.โ€”and just prior to another substantial sprinkle of precipitationโ€”Maryland State Highway Administration crews began putting cones on the dividing lines of Route 261 and a portion of Route 260. The cones were to prevent left turns on Route 261, a strategy which is designed to get vehicles quickly out of the area once the fireworks show concludes.

Fortunately, the rain didn’t persist. Before long the umbrellas gave way to American flags and the party was on, with people of all ages setting up portable chairs, spreading out blankets. Shortly before 9 p.m., the barges on which the fireworks were to be launched from left Fishing Creek and headed out into the Chesapeake Bay.

At Chesapeake Beach Resort and Spa, a horde of Independence Day revelers danced to classic rock played by Benfield Rush on the band shell stage. โ€œThere’s no venue quite like the Chesapeake Beach Resort,โ€ declared one of the members of the Severna Park-based group.

Another large crowd gathered at Veteransโ€™ Memorial Park to watch the spectacular sky show.ย

While the number of people may have been smaller than usual, it was a great evening to celebrate America in Chesapeake Beach.
