Memorial Day Weekend has been dubbed Racing’s Greatest Weekend. On Potomac Speedway’s 39th Anniversary special, their biggest Super Late Model event was held, the 35 lap Vernon Harris Memorial, a night that was about the thrill of victory for first-time winners Kenny Moreland and Race Alton.

14 year-old Race Alton followed in his father’s footsteps in the first feature event of the night, scoring his first career Potomac Speedway feature victory in the UCAR event. Alton started mid-pack but charged his way through the field, making passes look easy and making daring three-wide passes. Alton took the lead from Kevin Oates on lap 12 and held on for the victory.
 
“It took a while,” Race Alton said. “Once we got the new car, it helps a lot having more power. It feels good coming back and knowing I have a good car now because last week was disappointing.”
 
“I’m very proud of my son,” Rusty Alton said. “He went out and drove a very clean race. What can you say? 14 years old, only two people at Potomac Speedway that young to win a feature race. I’m the proudest dad in the world. My birthday was yesterday, couldn’t ask for a better present.”
 
Kenny Moreland scored his first career Super Late Model victory Potomac Speedway win in the 35 lap Vernon Harris Memorial.
 
Four-time defending champion David Williams started on the pole and took the early lead while Moreland worked his way past the cars ahead of him. He quickly took second place from Matt Quade. 19 laps in, something broke on Williams’ car handing the lead, and the win, to Moreland.  Ryan Hackett finished in second and Matt Quade finished third.
 
“It feels pretty good to get the first Super Late win,” Moreland said. “It definitely means a lot to win the Vernon Harris. The car was real good. We’ve got some good horsepower under the hood. Good car makes it easier to drive.”
 
Mike Latham won the Street Stock feature, holding off Mike Corbin. Right after the Super Late Model feature, the lights on the backstretch went out causing a delay. After the lights came back on, Potomac Speedway attempted to get the Modified race in before the impending rain came, but the rain came on lap four and Potomac Speedway was forced to call it a night.
