The regular season ended throughout Maryland and five teams are left standing as we head into the SMAC regional playoffs beginning this Friday, Nov. 12. In the 2-A South, McDonough (9-1) finished as the first seed after their 43-3 win at home against La Plata. They will start at home against Frederick Douglass (PG 9-1). The winner of that game will play at the home of the higher seed after the game between #3 Southern (AA 8-2) and #2 Hammond (9-1).

In the 4-A East division, North Point (9-1) got six rushing TD’s from six different players and only had to throw one pass en route to their 45-0 win vs Thomas Stone (0-10). Third Seeded North Point starts their playoff run at #2 Arundel (9-1). The winner of that game will face the winner between #4 Broadneck (8-2) and #1 Old Mill (9-1) in the second round.

3-A South brings three teams to the party as Westlake (9-1) earned the #1 Seed after their 43-14 win over Lackey (3-7). Westlake’s defense was tough getting TD’s on a fumble recovery and run of 37 yards from Duke University signee Jon Woodruff. Woodruff also added one of two safeties by Westlake (Walter White added the other). Marcel Edwards and Tony Hale also had long ‘Pick Sixes’ on defense for the Wolverines. Hale added a one yard rushing TD and Steven Koudossou had a 35 yard TD reception from Chris Istvan.

Both Lackey TD’s were scored by Jonathan Woodland, the first a 70 yard interception return and the other a 75 yard kickoff return.

Westlake will face Huntingtown (7-3) in Waldorf after the Hurricanes 35-20 win over Great Mills (5-5). This game is very interesting as these are the last two teams from SMAC to reach the state finals. (Westlake won in 2008 and Huntingtown lost in 2009).

The Chopticon Braves (7-3) earned the second seed after their 41-6 win over Leonardtown (2-8). The Braves will face #3 Friendly (PG 8-2) at home. The Braves rolled on two rushing TD’s from QB Cody Douglas. RB/LB Willie Adams was named Papa John’s Player of the Game and sliced through the center of the Leonardtown defensive line for a 25 yard TD run. Steven Quade and Sterling Miles added TD’s and the Braves led 33-0 at halftime. Josh Gray got a 39 yd TD reception from Douglas.

The special teams added a safety by Moose McElhaney to end the third quarter. After Coach Lisanti emptied his bench in the fourth quarter, Zach Stefater scored on a 15 yard TD catch from Drew Wysocki. The frustration of the last few years showed for a number of Raider seniors as they were tagged with a number of personal foul penalties. The taunting and trash talk started early and the officials stopped the game twice to warn players and coaches on both teams to stop the extracurricular activity.

The winners of the Chopticon vs Friendly game will face the winner of the Westlake ve Huntingtown game to decide the state semi-finalist in 3-A.
