Friendship, MD –ย A four-vehicle collision near the borderline of Calvert and Anne Arundel counties late Saturday morning, June 11 resulted in five injuries. Four of the five injured were flown to regional shock trauma centers, the Anne Arundel County Police Department (AACPD) reported.

According to an AACPD news release, the crash occurred around 11:38 a.m. on Chesapeake Beach Road (Route 260) and Sansbury Road in Friendship.

โ€œInvestigation showed that a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was traveling eastbound on Chesapeake Beach Road,โ€ the news release stated. โ€œThe Toyota had stopped to turn left onto Sansbury Road. Another vehicle, a Lexus RX350, approached the stopped Toyota truck from behind. The Lexus stopped to wait for the Toyota truck to turn left. A third vehicle, a Dodge Caravan, approached the stopped vehicles from the rear. The Dodge failed to stop and veered to the left. The Dodge struck the driver side rear of the Lexus. The Dodge continued across the westbound lane [and] was struck by a Cadillac SRX that was traveling westbound. The Dodge rotated and struck the Toyota.โ€

According to police, the driver of the Toyota was not injured. The driver of the Lexusโ€”identified as Iris Elena Wills, 47 of Temple Hills, was transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.ย  The driver of the Cadillacโ€”an unidentified 15-year-old juvenile who was operating the vehicle on a learnerโ€™s permitโ€”and two passengersโ€”Andrew Everett Canter Sr., 80 of Owings; and Bonnie Jean Canter, 72 of Owingsโ€”were flown to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center with nonlife-threatening injuries, police reported. The driver of the Dodge Caravanโ€”identified as Karen Frances Cella, 54 of Lothianโ€”was flown to Prince Georgeโ€™s Hospital Center with life-threatening injuries.

โ€œThe preliminary cause of the crash appears to be distracted driving,โ€ the AACPD press release stated. The agencyโ€™s Traffic Safety unit is handling the investigation.
