Former Republican Gov.ย Bob Ehrlich says he will challenge Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley in the upcoming November election. The former governor will formally kick off his campaign Wednesday, April 7 in Rockville,ย then plans to spend three days following the announcement traveling to small towns across the state.

Ehrlich, the state’s only Republican governor in a generation, lost to Martin O’Malley, a Democrat, by six percentage points in November 2006, after one term in office.

Ehrlich will face businessman Brian Murphy in the GOP primary.

On the Democratic side, O’Malley will be challenged by former state delegate George W. Owings III, who served as secretary of veterans affairs under Ehrlich.ย

Ehrlich, 52, stated that he wrestled with the decision for quite a while before deciding to enter the campaign. According to his Web site and other networking sites, Ehrlich stated that “he arrived at the decision within the lastย few months after an awful lot of thought.”
