Authorities in Charles County are investigating a crash that left two children and two adults injured including a Charles County Sheriff’s Deputy.

Rescue crews responded to a collision involving two vehicles, a green Honda Civic and a Police Cruiser on Wednesday, July 7 around 6:27 p.m. at 911 Washington Ave. in La Plata, right in front of the La Plata firehouse.

Investigation revealed the crash occurred as the Deputy was assisting a Town of La Plata police officer on a foot pursuit in connection with a domestic violence suspect. The officer had both his lights and sirens on as he was travelling northbound on Washington Avenue when he encountered a passenger car attempting to turn left onto Shining Willow Way. The officer swerved to avoid the collision, hit loose gravel and lost control of the cruiser. His vehicle crossed the center line and hit a southbound vehicle, a four door Honda Civic occupied by a woman and her two children, ages 6 and 4.

The roof of the Honda had to be cut off to get the patients out of the vehicle. Both children were transported to Children’s Hospital by MSP helicopter with serious injuries. The driver, a 38-year-old woman, was transported by Medavac to Med Star in stable condition.

The officer was transported by ambulance to Civista Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Police continue to investigate.
