On Monday, Feb. 22 Maryland State Comptroller, Peter Franchot will be visiting the Southern Maryland are for a variety of reasons. Franchotโ€™s first stop of the day will be at Calvert Senior High School to meet with school officials about funding a replacement high school.

The Calvert County Board of Education asked the Board of Public Works to allocate an additional $3 million in state funds for the replacement of Calvert High School. This additional money, when added to the FY 2011 Interagency Committee for Public School Construction funding recommendation of $5.45 million, the $2.31 million already allocated to this project in the FY 2010 state budget and the local funds allocated by the Calvert County government, would permit Calvert County Public Schools to begin the first phase of construction on this project this spring.ย

Comptroller Franchot will visit Southern Maryland Monday including stops at twoย  schools requesting millions in school construction funds, participating in a town hall meeting with Congressman Steny Hoyer and the IRS commissioner and opening a new office in Waldorf.

As a member of the stateโ€™s Board of Public Works, which approves school construction funding, Franchot plans to visit schools statewide to make a first-hand assessment of current needs. Calvert County is asking for $14 million for a replacement high school in Prince Frederick while Charles County officials are requesting $1.4 million for renovations to John Hanson Middle School.

The Comptroller will also participate in a financial education forum held at the United Way of Charles County office in La Plata with Congressman Hoyer and IRS Commissioner Shulman to discuss the state of financial education programs for southern Maryland families.

Lastly, Comptroller Franchot will open his newest office in Waldorf which is available for free tax preparation and assistance.
