Sunday afternoon, the 18th, at the close of the annual Friends of the Library annual book sale, saw the joining of The Rotary Club of Lexington Park, Honor societies of Leonardtown and St. Mary’s Ryken, community services volunteers, and sponsorship from Penske, Hewitts U-haul and Best Buy. The objective is to move all used books not sold to the charity to Books for International Goodwill (B.I.G.) where they will in turn be packaged up for shipment to countries without adequate reading material for both adults and children. B.I.G. just shipped their 4.000.000th book in January. This is first for Rotary to team with The Friends of the Library. Robin Finnacom, President of Lexington Park Rotary Club, is delighted to have the opportunity to serve the County Libraries with this effort and Louise Snell, President of Friends of the Library is pleased to have a way for the left over books to be used for literacy in other parts of the world. It is a great joint operation that certainly is a win-win for the givers and the receivers and demonstrates yet again the Rotary motto, Service above Self.
