OWINGS, Md. – Rausch Funeral Homes, which operates at three locations in Calvert County, begins to reopen after limiting services to 10 people or less.
Adhering to regulations onset by COVID-19, Rausch Funeral Home lessened attendance amounts back in spring.
Staff, who oversees the family-run business in Port Republic, Owings, and Lusby, Maryland, said that it has been a different change having fewer ceremonies. โDuring the time when the size of gatherings was severely limited, we offered funeral, memorial, and graveside services for immediate family only.โ
These ceremonies constituted 10 people or less, and memorial services for cremation were only available to be planned at a future date
โIt was difficult for families not being able to attend services and be with loved ones, but everyone understands the situation and has adapted well.โ Rausch staff remarked.
Part of this adaptation was being creative with technology. Michael Demarest and wife Rebecca Gross, who with family members directs the funeral homes, commented that virtual video platforms were a big help during this time. โWe implemented the use of Facebook Live through the Rausch Funeral Home Facebook page to livestream services for those who could not be in attendance.โ
โIf families werenโt comfortable meeting in person, we provided the option to make arrangements through virtual Zoom conferences, over the phone, or email.โ Gross explained.
Currently, some limitations are beginning to open. โWe have now increased the number of people allowed for visitations and services, as the state and county have eased restrictions, but all of these changes were made at the outset of COVID-19 and remain in place.โ adds Demarest.
โOverall, we are proud of the way the community has come together and accepted the changes we made. Everyone has been respectful and understanding of the limitations and requirements we had to make.โ
Rausch has been a part of Calvert County since 1974 and continues to be focused on the people of Southern Maryland. โWe never know what is going to happen next,โ staff admitted, โbut we are here to serve the families in this community…doing everything we can to keep families, our staff, and the community safe.โ
