Attention all Marylanders – March 9 is National Crabmeat Day!

Crabs are a prized seafood delicacy, including Alaskan King Crabs, Alaskan Snow Crabs, Dungeness Crabs and more, but Maryland residents can tell you that the favorite is the Blue Crab.

The Chesapeake Bay is home to these tasty creatures and they serve as a delightful reminder of summertime, good friends and our beautiful state. Who doesn’t love sitting around a picnic table on a warm evening with a pile of freshly steamed crabs stacked in front of them?

Chesapeake Bay Programย states that:

  • The blue crabโ€™s scientific name comes from the Greek words for โ€œbeautifulโ€ and โ€œswimmer.โ€
  • Male blue crabs are known as โ€œjimmies,โ€ while mature females are called “sooks.”
  • Blue crabs are one of the most important commercial and recreational catches in the Chesapeake Bay.

Celebrate today with some crab cakes, crab legs, crab imperial… the options are almost endless. Don’t forget that crab season officially opens April 1!

Happy Crabmeat Day!
