The St. Mary’s County Bureau of Criminal Investigations is an investigative team comprised of Detectives from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office and the Maryland State Police, Leonardtown Barrack. The unit was established on July 1, 2003 and is based in Leonardtown, Maryland.
On March 21, 2011 St. Mary’s County Bureau of Criminal Investigations received a report of suspected child abuse from the Maryland Department of Social Services alleging a school teacher, employed by the St. Mary’s County Public Schools, attempted to engage in a sexual relationship with a juvenile student. During the investigation BCI received full cooperation of school officials. The investigation consisted of numerous interviews and the execution of a search and seizure warrant in Lexington Park, Maryland. The investigation resulted in criminal charges being filed charging Jonathan David Cooney, W/M, age 26, of Lexington Park, Maryland with one count of Sexual Offense in the Fourth Degree. Cooney was charged via a criminal summons on March 31, 2011. Additional charges are pending following a review by the St. Mary’s County State’s Attorney’s Office.
