Glen Burnie, Md. – The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration’s Highway Safety Office (MDOT MVA MHSO) is accepting grant applications for traffic safety projects that will take place between October 1, 2019 and September 30, 2020 (Federal Fiscal Year 2020). The application deadline is Sunday, March 3, 2019.
“Each year more than 500 people are killed on Maryland roads and we are dedicated to reducing that number to zero,” said MDOT MVA Administrator and Governor Hogan’s Highway Safety Representative Chrissy Nizer. “It is only through strong partnerships that we can accomplish this goal and we look forward to receiving applications for projects that can help prevent crashes and eliminate avoidable tragedies.”
Two types of grants are available: one for law enforcement and one for other eligible agencies including State and local government, institutions of higher education, hospitals, associations and nonprofits. New projects must have statewide applicability. Local “pilot” projects that demonstrate the potential for expansion throughout the State may also be submitted. All grant projects must support and implement strategies in the Maryland Strategic Highway Safety Plan.
“We’re looking for agencies to implement innovative projects that will help us achieve our goal of zero traffic fatalities,” said Dr. Timothy Kerns, Director of the MDOT MVA MHSO. “We welcome partners to work with us on the ‘Four Es’ of highway safety – education, enforcement, engineering and emergency medical services.”
The MDOT MVA MHSO is responsible for administering grant-funded programs that focus on preventing impaired, aggressive and distracted driving; encouraging 100 percent seat belt and child safety seat use; enhancing traffic-records systems; and ensuring the safety of pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists and motorists. The highway safety office provides funding on a competitive basis to projects that are data driven and implement proven countermeasures for reducing motor vehicle crashes.
