SOUTHERN MARYLAND — December weekends are filling up fast across the region as families dive into holiday traditions, Christmas markets, light displays and community gatherings. With multiple guides available to help plan outings, Southern Maryland residents have no shortage of festive ways to celebrate the season.
This past weekend offered a preview of what’s ahead. At A Casual Christmas in Clements, visitors enjoyed unlimited pony rides, a hayride hosted by the Grinch and a cozy reading of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The family-friendly attraction continues throughout the month with lights, displays and activities designed to bring the holiday spirit to life.

In Calvert County, the annual Christmas Market welcomed steady crowds searching for handmade gifts, seasonal treats and local art. The upcoming weekend in Charles County will feature the Kris Kringle Market, a local favorite.

And in La Plata, the Grinch made another appearance, taking over a fire truck and delighting families as he wrapped up the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department Santa route with mischief. Midway through the route, he stirred up chaos in the Target shopping center parking lot, where firefighters kept a friendly watch to ensure he played nice while handing out candy canes to the crowd.

This appearance is part of a holiday contest hosted by the department, where residents are encouraged to spot the Grinch around town and say the secret code—“Stop, Drop, and Roll!”—to receive a raffle ticket. One lucky winner will be drawn on Dec. 20.
Meanwhile, the Green Acres Bazaar showcased vendors, baked goods, and appearances by Santa and his elves as the community explored local treats and stocking stuffers throughout the building.
