California, MD — It was billed as โThe Way to Wellness.โ The annual St. Maryโs County Department of Aging and Human Services Community Health Fair provided a number of ways to achieve that goal. Indeed the packed parking lot, halls and rooms at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center Oct. 30 proved that hundreds of people were looking to find the way.
Many people use the event to get their annual flu shot. The nurses and volunteers from MedStar St. Maryโs Hospital Health Connections reported a steady flow of customers throughout the day.
The following screenings were offered:
โข Vision screening by Leonardtown Lions Clubโ
โข Blood pressure screening by College of Southern Marylandโs nursing students and MedStar St. Maryโs Hospital
โข Balance screening by Freedom Physical Therapy
โข Blood Glucose screening by MedStar Health Connections
โข Body Composition screening by MedStar Health Connections

โข Leg vein screening by Home Health Products Express
โข Skin Cancer screening by Dr. George Verghese of Mid Atlantic Skin Surgery Institute, and Maryland Dermatology of Maryland
Deputies from the St. Maryโs County Sheriffโs Office were on hand to collect unneeded or outdated prescription medication.
Seminars throughout the day addressed issues such as: living and thriving with diabetes; keeping your heart healthy; the St. Maryโs County Health Enterprise Zone and Medicare Part D updates.
The halls and the main meeting room were filled with vendors from health care providers and non-profit organizations dispensing information and lots of goodies including the ever-present free pens.
Food was provided by Rita Bโs Catering.
A number of sponsors also contributed to helping the county agency put on the successful event.
