TheBayNet.com confirmed with Charles County Fire Department PIO Bill Smith that two people were transported for precautionary measures. One patient was a diabetic, the other was a child who was being evaluated for heat exhaustion.

Smith said the rest of the students are now being loaded on to buses and heading back to their home schools in Charles County, St. Mary’s County and King George County, VA. Today was Baseball in Education Day at Regency Furniture Stadium, home of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.ย

The stadium is taking measures to provide water and cooling stations to keep everyone safe and comfortable in the heat. The Charles County Fire Department Mass Casualty Unit from Waldorf is also providing cooling fans.

Regency Furniture Stadium takes the safety of visitors very seriously and keeps an eye on temperatures and makes a decision whether an event should continue or be cancelled. Tomorrow, May 18, the Education in Baseball Day has already been rescheduled for 10:00 a.m. with gates opening at 9:00 a.m. in response to tomorrow’s expected high temperatures.

The Charles County fire department will stay on site to provide cooling stations.

There is code Orange air quality alert in effect today for Southern Maryland due to the high temperatures.
