Area runners made some of the initial minutes of 2014 memorable with a quick morning trek through Prince Frederick. The annual Resolution 5 Kilometer (K) race sponsored by Southern Maryland Community Network Inc. (SMCN) was held Wednesday, Jan. 1. Despite the chilly conditions, the dozens of participants traversed the course on Prince Frederick Boulevard in hopes of getting the new year off to a good start. With their entrees fees they also lent a hand to SMCNโs mission to aid the regionโs residents with mental health needs.
According to SMCN Executive Director Karen Carloni, the 5K race is a major fundraiser for the agency.
The distinction of being first across the finish line proved to be a close contest. Trent Herzog, 16 of Lusby bested Thomas Rudowsky, 21 by a mere eight seconds. Herzog logged a race time of 16 minutes and 46 seconds. The third place finisher was Colin Fleming, 18, whose time was 17 minutes and 31 seconds.
Another teenager who performed impressively was Hayley Jackson of Lusby. The 14-year-old was the raceโs top female finisher with a time of 19 minutes and 47 seconds.
The race was timed by the Chesapeake Bay Running Club. Complete results will be subsequently posted on the clubโs web site at www.cbrcmd.org
