Calvert County Sheriffโs Office Deputy B. Schaefer was traveling South on Maryland Route 4 approaching Auto Drive in Prince Frederick Saturday at 11:39 p.m. when she began observing aย 1996 Black Ford Explorer displaying Virginia registration โID 24-889.โย Based on her observations that the vehicle crossed the center and shoulder lines, Deputy Schaefer initiated a traffic stop for failure to obey a traffic control device.ย The vehicle stopped in front of Bayside Chevrolet at the intersection of South bound Route 4 and Auto Drive.
Deputy N. Lenharr arrived and approached the vehicle with Deputy Schaefer.ย As Deputy Lenharr attempted to make contact with the driver, he suddenly fled from the scene in his vehicle.ย Deputies Schaefer and Lenharr returned to their vehicles and pursued the suspect South on Maryland Route 4.ย The suspect failed to stop at a red light at the intersection of Route 4 and Stoakley Road.ย He suddenly made a U-turn in the intersection and began driving North on Route 4.ย The suspect then began to flee at speeds of over 100 miles per hour.ย He failed to stop at a red light at the intersection of Route 4 and Plum Point Road and he continued North through Huntingtown.
Deputies Schaefer and Lenharr continued the pursuit north on Route 4 through Sunderland until the suspect changed lanes and struck the side of a 1999 Toyota RAV 4, that was also traveling north.ย The Toyota was operated by Miya Carroll of California, Maryland.ย ย The suspectโs vehicle spun around, facing south bound in the north bound lanes, and struck a guardrail in the median of Route 4, in the vicinity of Cameleer Pass in Sunderland.ย The Toyota came to a stop in lane 1.ย
The suspect refused several commands to exit his vehicle and then resisted arrest.ย The suspect was identified as Ray Vern Posey Jr , 53 of Woodbridge Virginia.ย A subsequent search incident to arrest revealed that Mr. Posey was in possession of suspected PCP and related paraphernalia.ย He was also determined to be driving while impaired by a controlled dangerous substance.ย Furthermore, he did not possess a valid driverโs license.
Posey was arrested by Deputy Lenharr on charges of Resisting Arrest, CDS Possession, Possession of CDS Paraphernalia, DUI, Fleeing and Eluding and Aggressive Driving, as well as several other traffic related charges.ย Because Posey was uninjured and he refused to submit to a breath test, he was transported immediately to the Calvert Detention Center.ย His vehicle was stored as evidence.
The occupants of the Toyota were uninjured and they drive their vehicle from the scene.ย No Sheriffโs Office personnel were injured and no equipment was damaged.
