The Maryland Department of Transportation reminds residents that snow beginning early Monday before rush hour is expected to change to freezing rain later Monday, then rain Tuesday. The State Highway Administrationย  (SHA) is prepared to respond and treat highways with salt and plow if needed.

With schools and state government closed Monday, Feb. 15, SHA crews will have less traffic to contend with during operations. Even with salting, the recent frigid cold temperatures could impact the effectiveness of road treatments. Additionally, when the changeover to freezing rain or sleet occurs, would-be drivers should NOT be on the road.

Highway crews will be out overnight tonight and through the duration of the storm plowing and salting as needed.ย  If at all possible, please stay off the roads and allow SHA and contractors space to effectively manage the storm response.ย  If you must drive, only do so with a vehicle able to navigate the conditions, use extreme caution, slow down and allow extra travel time.
