With the cold winter months set to descend upon Southern Maryland in the coming weeks, commissioners believe it is critical that citizens are aware homelessness and hunger exist in St. Maryโ€™s County and is increasing.

To spread the word about the problem commissioners have declared the month of November Homelessness and Hunger Awareness Month in St. Maryโ€™s County.

In presenting the proclamation Commissioner Todd Morgan said โ€œto help achieve the goal of ending homelessness and hunger in St. Maryโ€™s County we must work in partnership with the faith based community, social and human service agencies and government to ensure that services are coordinated and available to meet the needs of St. Maryโ€™s County residents.โ€

The interfaith non-profit organization Wrapping Arms โ€˜Round Many (WARM) was recognized for providing safe and welcoming shelter to men and women in St. Maryโ€™s County experiencing homelessness during the coldest months of the year.

Commissioners also acknowledged the St. Maryโ€™s County Homeless Prevention Board, which is made up of local human service agencies, organizations and churches. The group meets regularly to provide a coordinated system of care to address the needs of homeless individuals. The board is hosting a Homeless Prevention Resource Day on November 7, to provide one-stop access to services and information for homeless individuals and those on the verge of homelessness.
