Congressman and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer will deliver the commencement address at the 2007 St. Maryโs College of Maryland (SMCM) graduation ceremony Sat., May 12, at 10 a.m. on the Townhouse Green of the SMCM campus.
Congressman Hoyerโs speech will address the world graduates will enter and the relevanceย of their careers and futures to theย country. One of theย predominant themesย will be the idea ofย civility and the importance of treating others withย dignity and respect.
Congressman Steny H. Hoyer represents Marylandโs Fifth Congressional District, which includes Calvert, Charles and St. Maryโs counties and portions of Prince Georgeโs and Anne Arundel counties. A resident of Mechanicsville, MD, Congressman Hoyer is now serving his 14th term, making him the longest-serving Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Southern Maryland in history. Congressman Hoyer is also a member of the SMCM Board of Trustees.
In November 2006, Congressman Hoyer was elected by his colleagues in the Democratic Caucus to serve as House Majority Leader in the 110th Congress. His election as Majority Leader โthe second-highest position in the House โ makes him the highest-ranking Member of Congress from Maryland in history.
