ย U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Mechanicsville) released the following statement Tuesday night after winning the Democratic nomination for Marylandโ€™s 5th Congressional District:

ย “I am very honored to win the Democratic primary and to be a part of such a historic election for the state of Maryland.ย

ย “The Chesapeake Primary has shown the nation that Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia are essential factors in deciding the outcome of this presidential race. Voters in our area turned out in record numbers because they know how much their voice matters.

ย โ€œThe General Election will be an election of ideas. I will continue to fight for those policies that strengthen our national defense and ensure the economic security of more of Marylandโ€™s citizens. I also believe that we must restore fiscal discipline by reining in record budget deficits and the spiraling national debt.ย  It is imperative that we get our fiscal house in order, while enacting pro-growth economic policies that create jobs and making crucial investments in our national security, education and health care.

ย “In addition, I will focus on the issues that impact Southern Maryland; to advocate for fair pay and benefits for our federal workers; to champion policies that protect our environment; and to fight for improvements to our transportation system so that our citizens can spend less time in congestion and more time with their families.

ย “I want to thank the voters of the 5th District of Maryland for supporting me. I look forward to continuing our dialogue on the issues facing our community.โ€
