U.S. Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) will meet with students at the federally-funded after school program at the 21st Century Community Learning Center at Lexington Park Elementary on Monday, Jan. 23 at 3:30 p.m.
He will observe their activities and speak to some of the 80 students who attend this program on an average day.
The purpose of the program is to establish, or expand, community learning centers that provide students with academic enrichment opportunities along with activities designed to complement the studentsโ regular academic program.
The program, which is federally funded and now administered by the State, serves 1.4 million students across the country, including 18,600 in Maryland.
The list of officials joining Hoyer will include Dr. Michael Martirano, Superintendent, St. Maryโs County Public Schools; Mark Smith, St. Maryโs County School System Special Programs; Mr. Rudy Jones, Principal, Lexington Park Elementary; Jodi Grant, Executive Director, The Afterschool Alliance; Pam Wilkerson, Executive Director, Boys and Girls Club of Southern Maryland; and Vanessa Diggs, Specialist for Afterschool Programs, Maryland State Department of Education.
