On April 29 at 9:45 p.m., Charles County Sheriffโs officers responded to the CVS located at 6260 Crain Highway in La Plata for the report of a shoplifting.
A lookout for the suspectsโ vehicle, a Good Humor ice cream truck, was broadcast. Officer D. Benthin located the vehicle traveling north in the 2800 block of Crain Highway in Waldorf.
He conducted a traffic stop but after stopping, the suspects sped northbound on Crain Highway and failed to stop for officers. As officers pursued the suspectsโ vehicle, it struck a Chevrolet Avalanche.
Officers quickly apprehended the occupants of the ice cream truck in the vehicle and identified them as Wesley Leon Jumper, 36, of Washington, D.C., and Shawn Carnell Stewart, 36, of Capitol Heights.
The driver of the Avalanche, Edward Patrick Malloy, 54, of Temple Hills, and his passengers, William Paul Washington, Jr., 65, of Temple Hills and Ricardo Walter Alexander, 27, of Washington, D.C., sustained non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash and were transported by ambulance to Civista Medical Center for treatment.
Jumper and Stewart refused medical treatment and were charged with theft valued at more than $500.
Stewart, who was driving the ice cream truck, was also charged with reckless driving, aggressive driving and fleeing and eluding police. They were being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending appearances before a district court commissioner. Inside the truck, officers found more than $500 of toiletries that had been stolen from the CVS.
