It could have been thunder that you heard or it could have been a small tornado that caused that breeze that blew through Lusby on Saturday the 17th of May, but it wasn’t.

What it was the distinct sounds made by a swarm of 139 retired racing greyhounds that descended on a small farm in Lusby to celebrate their retirement at Greyt Expectations Greyhound Rescue’s 5th Annual Reunion Picnic.

There were greyhounds there from as far away as Georgia and as close as Lusby.ย  They came from Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Delaware and Virginia.ย  They came in all different sizes and colors, but all of them carried themselves with that grace and beauty that is the greyhound.

The weather was beautiful and the hounds came a running because that is what a greyhound loves to do, RUN!!ย  For five hours they ran, swam and played to their hearts content while their adopters had fun with food, contests and just getting reacquainted with old friends and making new friends.

After sunset and all the hounds had retired from happy exhaustion, there was a bonfire with marshmallows, smores and numerous stores of everyone’s greyhound.ย  Until even the adopters who had decided to campout for the picnic were too tired to stay awake.

Morning brought more activity as about 30 hounds met at the Tiki Bar, not for drinks but for the annual Solomon’s walk.ย  Proudly parading their adopters around the island and along the boardwalk basking in the astonished stares of residents and passers-by as these beautiful hounds took an early morning stroll.

Then came the good-byes as we all departed for our own little corner of the world to compose emails about the adventure we had and to quietly start planning for the 6th reunion next year.
