Together Ring – one plus one equals “us.”

California, MD – That much anticipated occasion, Valentine’s Day is Feb. 14, which falls on a Sunday this year. While flowers, candy and candlelit suppers are nice, a much more lasting gift on Valentine’s Day is jewelry.

According to local jeweler Rick Norris, Valentine’s is ranked third—behind Christmas and Mother’s Day—was the occasion that keeps him and his 14 employees the busiest at his store in San Souci Plaza.

Men who want to convey their affection and devotion to that special woman come to Rick’s Jewelers in the days leading up to Valentine’s, seeking heart-shaped pieces and diamond necklaces.

Rings are also popular. “There are people who get engaged for Valentine’s Day,” said Rick, who explained the surprise “pop the question” with ring in hand scenario doesn’t always apply. “Usually girls give the guys some idea what they want,” he said.

While the store’s in-stock merchandise is popular, Rick estimated about “85 percent is custom work. They draw us a picture and we make it for them. It’s personalized.”

Rick said this year necklaces and diamond stud earrings currently rank one and two as the top jewelry items men purchase for ladies for Valentine’s Day. “Trends seem to be changing year-to-year,” he said.

One of the trendier jewelry items is the “Together Ring,” a sparkling item that goes on the ladies finger and symbolizes two people combined as one, or “one plus one equals us.”

While any major holiday that involves giving or exchanging gifts tends to have merchants on guard for a last minute rush, Rick said of customers with jewelry on their Valentine’s list “usually call ahead of time. By the 13th, they’ve got it.”

When Valentine’s Day’s 24 hours are up, the jewelry carefully selected and suited for someone special continues to sparkle, perhaps forever.
