Leonardtown, MD — The annual late summer (pre-fall) tradition for adults is going to the St. Mary’s County Fair on Friday with kids in tow. With school out and free admission for children Friday’s School Day has always been the big draw for families and this year was no exception with good weather and a day filled with activities.

Four-H activities are always prominent on School Day. This year the 4-H Horse and Pony Show, Livestock Show and Cake Auction were on the bill. Four-H activities continue on Saturday with the Rabbit Showmanship Contest and the popular Livestock Auction.

As in the past the pig and duck races were a big draw for the kids. And at most times during the day the carnival grounds were packed and the rides going full-tilt.
Other activities throughout the day included chainsaw artists, the Mitchell Show Marionettes, stilt walker Dick Haynes, the Sutter Post Farm Clydesdales and for the first time the Junk Rock Drumming Ensemble.

The fair continues all weekend. Sunday is Family Day – another opportunity to bring the kids back if they didn’t get their fill on Friday.
