la plata sign code

Citizen Jeanine James speaks at the La Plata Town Council meeting Sept. 27.

La Plata, MD – The Town of La Plata voted to pass a new sign ordinance Tuesday, Sept. 28.

The new ordinance institutes what is called the “common sign plan” which requires sign designs in certain areas to be uniform, or at least similar, to other sign designs.

Jeanine James, who worked on the code with the La Plata Business Association and town leaders, implored the town council to postpone the vote until next month.

โ€œThere are still a lot of glitches,โ€ James said.ย

The La Plata Business Association requested a revision of the ordinance to reflect a recent Supreme Court ruling that limited where signs can be placed. The goal of the ruling was to avoid clutter and eliminate hazards to safety caused by signs.

The town revised the code in light of that request. The new code focuses on signs that need permits and signs that do not. The code basically details which types of signs are permitted and which are not within town limits.

โ€œThis new ordinance spells the law out very clearly. Weโ€™re not trying to hurt the business community.โ€ council member Lynn Gilroy said.
