La Plata Mayor Roy G. Haleย announced Oct. 25 that this term as mayor will be his last.
La Plata, MD –ย La Plata Mayor Roy G. Hale announced at the town councilโs monthly meeting Tuesday, Oct. 25 that this term as mayor will be his last.
โIโve spent eight years as mayor and ten years before that as a councilmember,โ Hale said. โAt some point, you look at where you should move on. I think that the time has come.
โSo I wish to announce that I will not be a candidate for mayor in the 2017 election,โ he said.
As the councilmember, Hale was part of the town government that oversaw the rebuilding of La Plata after the devastating 2002 tornado destroyed sections of the municipality before weaving a destructive path across Charles and Calvert counties.
โTo say we were overwhelmed is an understatement,โ Hale recalled in April. โIt was very traumatic.โ
The town’s infrastructure suffered immense damage.
The town has accomplished a great deal in the years since that storm, he acknowledged, adding that La Plata was recently recognized as one of the Top 10 municipalities in the state of Maryland.
โLa Plata was chosen fifth,โ Hale said proudly. โChesapeake Beach was ninth. We feel like we must be doing something right.โ
Hale thanked the town council for all its hard work during the eight years he has been mayor.
โI trust they will continue to work very hard,โ he noted.
โI never thought I would end up in this position,โ he said Tuesday night. โI want to wish everyone well.โ
