Once again, the sod warriors came, and they ripped grass.

Racers from all across the country were at Bowles Farm in Clements July 13 and 14 for the annual STA-BIL Turf Battle lawn mower races.

The Bay Net attended the races. See below for a slideshow of action-packed shots from the event. Also see attached video for exclusive โ€œhelmet-camโ€ footage from local racer Jason Brown.

In 1992 it was just a dream of Bruce Kaufmanโ€™s (Mr. Mow it All) to start a lawnmower racing circuit. He organized the U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association and the new hobby took off. Today there are local chapters all over the country and more than 100 sanctioned races a year.

Several classes of mowers ripped up the sod in St. Maryโ€™s, with some of the higher classes reaching as fast as 60 mph.

The winners of each 20-lap race receive trophies for their effort, which are usually given out to eager children waiting at the foot of the grandstand. There are no cash prizes for any racers in USLMRA events.

All proceeds from the event went to benefit the Seventh District Rescue Squad and Seventh District Optimist Club.
