Frederick Ray Smith,
80, of La Plata

Frederick Ray Smith, 80, of La Plata died Dec. 12, 2002, after being stuck by a car. He was a research chemist with Avtex Corp. He was a member of American Chemical Society. He loved genealogy, woodworking, history, reading, and gardening. He graduated from Maryvill College and earned a master’s degree in chemistry from Virginia Tech. He earned 19 patents. Mr. Smith was a World War II Navy veteran. Born Dec. 22, 1921, in Richlands, Virginia. He was the son of the late Gillespie Ray Smith and the late Mary Elizabeth Garlard Smith. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth Day Smith; and brother, Glenn Smith. He is survived by his wife, Muriel Headrick Smith; son, David Smith; daughters, Martha Hornick, Jean Royster, Helen Pyle, Susan Conner, and Erica Piercey; sisters, Mary Steele, and Emily Hoyer; twenty-two grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. A Memorial service will be at Good Samaritan Church Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Don Benjamin will officiate. Burial will be private.
