The Archbishop Neale School in La Plata, won first place in the Careers Category of the Charles County Chamber of Commerce 5th annual Festival of Scarecrows.ย Judging was held on October 20. The winner was announced October 24th at the Town of La Plata Fall Festival/Taste of La Plata.
The Archbishop Neale schoolโs winning display depicted a priest and a sister with two children, one dressed in a school uniform.ย The banner read, “Education is not scary!”ย The display also contained an aluminum rendering of the school symbol, which will be mounted on the outside wall of the school after the display is dismantled.ย
The Charles County Chamber of Commerce reports a portion of the proceeds from the Festival of Scarecrows goes to the Chamber’s Nonprofit of the Year, Hospice of Charles County.
The categories for the festival were sports theme, scary, fictional characters, and career. First, Second, Third place, and Honorable Mention were awarded for each category. A People’s Choice Award was also announced, with the winner receiving a $25 gift card from The Washington Savings Bank. La Tolteca Restaurant won the Peopleโs Choice award, as well as Second Place for Fictional Character. This is the first time La Tolteca entered the competition.
In the career category, the winners were Archbishop Neale School (First Place), Charles County Rescue Squad (Second Place), Beacon Printing (Third Place), Askey, Askey, & Associates (Honorable Mention).
