Hello Sports Fans, Iโ€™m Buddy Long. And this is the Wednesday, July 31 edition of Southern Maryland Sports.

Chris Davis broke out of his second half slump, belting his league leading 38th homer, a 2 run shot in the sixth, leading the Orioles to a 4-3 opening series victory over the Houston Astros at Camden Yards. Wei- Yin Chen went 7 and a third innings, giving up 7 hits, 1 walk, and 9 strikeouts, as the Birds improve to 59-48 on the season. The 2 teams will square off again this evening.

The Oโ€™s made a couple of moves Tuesday, releasing veteran pitcher Joel Pineiro. Additionally, the team announced that second baseman Brian Roberts would be headed to the Paternity Leave List with a new addition expected to the family any day. Roberts WAS in the lineup last night against Houston.

Alex Avila hit a Grand Slam in the 6th off of Stephen Strasburg, powering the Detroit Tigers to a 5-1 win over the Washington Nationals at Comerica Park. The loss drops the Nats 3 games below the .500 mark. Gio Gonzalez will be on the mound for the Nats tonight as they wrap up their 2 game series before heading to Milwaukee for a weekend series with the Brewers.

On the horizon today, prior to both teams hitting the field is the Major League Baseballย  Trading Deadline, scheduled to endย  4pm today.

Sporting a 2 game winning streak, the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs continued theirย  road trip against Liberty Division leading Long Island Tuesday night. Wladimir Sutil hit his 4th homer of the year as part of a 4 run 4th inning, all on 2 outs. But a 3 run 7th powered the Ducks to the 5-4 win in Game 2 of the 3 game set, breaking the Blue Crabs 2 game win streak. The loss drops the Blue Crabs to 10-15, 6 games back of Long Island in the Liberty Division with the rubber match between the 2 teams later this evening.

Training Camp for the Redskins continued Tuesday in Richmond with all eyes focused on the walking boot sported by Corner Back DeAngelo Hall. Hall rolled his right ankle during practice Monday. While X Rays were inconclusive, it appears Hall has some sprained ligaments, and will be viewing from the sidelines for the next few days.

With linebacker Joe Mays signing with Houston, the Redskins brought in former Buffalo and Green Bay linebacker Nick Barnett for a tryout. If all goes well, Barnet could replace the injured Keenan Robinson, out 3-5 months with a torn pectoral Muscle.

And finally, running back Tristan Davis apparently has called it quits with the team, telling head coach Mike Shanahan that his heart was no longer in the game and he would be retiring. As a result, the Redskins placed Davis on the exempt/left squad lis
