Prince Frederick, MD – The Optimist Club of Calvert Prince Frederick announced their 2017 Scholarship recipients on July 10. The Club, through its Calvert Optimist Community Parks Foundation Inc., began their scholarship program in 1975 with a single award valued at $2,000. Today the Optimist Club awards three scholarships each year; the Knapp Scholarship valued at $8,000; the Optimist Scholarship valued at $6.000; and the Career /Vocational/Technological Scholarship valued at $3,000. Over the past 42 years, the Calvert Optimist Scholarship Program has awarded $247,250 in scholarships to Calvert County youth.

This yearโ€™s Knapp Scholarship was awarded to Northern High graduate Isabella J. Herrera. Isabella will be attending Flagler College in St. Augustine Florida this fall and will be majoring in International Relations and Human Rights.ย 

The 2017 Optimist Scholarship was awarded to Marina L Cox. Marina is a Patuxent High graduate and will attending the University of Maryland at College Park this fall studying Hearing Sciences.

The 2017 Career/Vocational/Tech Scholarship was awarded to John E. DeGrange, III, a graduate of Huntingtown High. John will be attending Clemson University in Clemson South Carolina this fall majoring in Construction Management.

The Optimist Club of Calvert-Prince Frederick meets on the second Monday of each month at The Greene Turtle Restaurant in Prince Frederick at 7 p.m.ย  Anyone interested in joining the Club and making a difference in the life of a child are encouraged to attend and join the members in being the โ€˜Friend of Youth.โ€™
