Waldorf, MD – Despite an iffy weather forecast, hundreds gathered at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf Sunday, May 6 for the purpose of raising cash for the March of Dimes. According to local March of Dimes spokeswoman Jennifer Abell, over $87,000 was raised by approximately 800 participants. Organizers had set a goal of $110,000. The three-mile walk through the neighborhood adjacent to the ballpark began at 9 a.m. It was preceded by the Super Hero Sprint.
Organization officials stated the money raised โhelps expand programs and educate medical professionals to make sure moms and babies get the best possible care.โ March of Dimes officials estimate that more than 380,000 are born prematurely in the U.S. each year. Complications of premature birth comprise the number one cause of death in babies. The infants who survive often have severe health complications, including blindness, intellectual disabilities and hearing loss.
โWe saw today how important the health of moms and babies is to the people of Southern Maryland,โ said local March for Babies Chairman Larry Foster. โIโm so proud to be part of this community of people who came together to join in the fight for the health of all moms and babies.โ
The Southern Maryland event was held with the aid of 15 corporate sponsors. Participants were provided with breakfast and lunch, were warmed up prior to the walk by professional trainers and enjoyed music provided by DJ Chris Productions throughout the event.
