Leonardtown, MD โ€“ Approximately one in five American adults experience mental health issues in a given year, according to statistics from the National Alliance of Mental Illness. Approximately one in 25 adults experience a mental illness so severe it interferes or limits one or more life activities, such as family life or work.

Residents of St. Maryโ€™s County now have a new resource available to them when they are dealing with a mental health issue. Harry Gill, MD, PhD, of Axis Healthcare Group is partnering with MedStar St. Maryโ€™s Hospital to offer mental health services at MedStar St. Maryโ€™s Primary Care office in Great Mills, Maryland.

Dr. Gill holds a double-major doctorate degree in neuroscience and cognitive psychology from Iowa State University and is board certified in psychiatry.ย  Dr. Gill evaluates patients at MedStar St. Maryโ€™s Hospital in Leonardtown, as well as the Great Mills office.

โ€œWeโ€™re focused on providing a continuum of care for patients,โ€ said Dr. Gill. โ€œWith a large shortage of psychiatrists nationwide, we are excited to offer mental health services in two different areas of St. Maryโ€™s County.โ€

Dr. Gill specializes in a variety of mental health areas affecting adolescents and adults, including anxiety disorders, adolescent psychiatry, eating disorders, geriatric psychiatry, memory disorders, mood disorders such as depression or bipolar disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia and post-traumatic stress disorder.

โ€œAn early diagnosis and appropriate treatment produces better results,โ€ said Dr. Gill. โ€œIt is normal to experience sad feelings or to worry during your day-to-day life. However, itโ€™s important to recognize signs of a more serious problem.โ€
