As the Southern Maryland winter began to set in students at St. Maryโ€™s College gathered together to try to make it a little warmer for some others in the community.

St. Maryโ€™s College professor, Holly Blumner, organized the first St. Maryโ€™s College Make a Blanket Day. It was something Blumner had wanted to do for a while, and a project similar to several she took part in as a graduate student in Hawaii. โ€œWe had a great turnout,โ€ Blumner told The Bay Net, after approximately twenty students had showed up to cut and sew fabric into blankets for others. โ€œThey were all very enthusiastic and dedicated,โ€ Blumner said of the students. โ€œEveryone worked really hard and was very excited about doing this.

The collection of irons, quilting fabric, sewing machines and patterns were put to good use by Blumnerโ€™s group of students, who produced seven blankets after a day of patching and sewing in the Collegeโ€™s Montgomery Hall. Some of the students were learning new sewing skills as they worked. The blankets were donated to a local shelter for battered women and children.

โ€œI think I am going to try and do it again some time,โ€ Blumner told The Bay Net after the success of the first blanket-making day.
