On July 21, at approximately 10:20 p.m., a 53-year-old female exited the Wal-Mart Store in California and entered her vehicle. As she started her vehicle, she was approached by a black male who opened her door and yelled at her to get out of the vehicle.

The victim was unable to get out of her vehicle because she had her seatbelt on. The suspect attempted to pull the victim from the vehicle. The victim began screaming which drew the attention of other witnesses in the parking lot. The suspect then fled on foot.

The victim and witnesses provided deputies with a description of the suspect. A short time later, Senior Deputy First Class J. Molitor observed a subject matching the description of the suspect on Amber Drive. SDFC. Molitor detained the subject and the victim was transported to Amber Drive.

The victim positively identified the subject, Steven Wendell Mason, 19 of Lexington Park, as the person who assaulted and attempted to steal her vehicle. Mason was arrested and charged with Attempted Robbery, Attempted Car-Jacking, attempted Theft over $500.00 and Second-Degree Assault. He is incarcerated on a $25,000 bond.
