Alan Kurtis Kohut, 27 of Ridge, was charged with attempted murder after severely beating another man at the A&E Motel in Lexington Park, police report.
Numerous people called 911 Friday night saying a man was being beat to death at the motel, and the suspect was also trashing the room.
St. Maryโs Sheriffโs Lt. Daniel Alioto was working off-duty security at a nearby neighborhood.He responded and assisted in apprehending the combative suspect.
Alioto said the victim was beaten severely, possibly with a bottle to the face numerous times.
The suspect also bashed up the room the victim was in, Alioto said, and threw items out into the parking lot.
A crowd of nearly 70 people stood around as volunteer medical personnel tended to the victim, who lives and works at the motel.
Maryland State Police Trooper 7 helicopter was called in to take the injured man to a regional trauma center, but mechanical problems prevented the flight and the man was taken by ambulance to St. Maryโs Hospital.
On Saturday, St. Mary’s Bureau of Criminal Investigations Commander Rick Burris released the following information:
At 10 p.m. Nov. 9, police responded to the A&E Motel in Lexington Park for a disturbance and assaultย in a motel room.
Upon arriving officers located the suspect, Alan Kurtis Kohut, 27 of Ridge, in the room with the victim Thomas Alvin Campbell Sr., whom was lying on the floor with obvious head and facial injuries.
Kohut threw items out of the room to keep onlookers and police at bay but heย was taken into custody.
Police determined that he had repeatedly beaten and kicked the victim in the head and face in an attempt to kill him, after the victim refused to give him money.
Kohut was charged by BCI detectives with Attempted First Degree Murder, First Degree Assault, and Attempted Robbery.
He was incarcerated at the St. Maryโs County Detention Center. Campbell was taken to St. Maryโs Hospital with serious head and facial injuries.
